This is your chance to give an angel in your life some wings.
After more than 1600 butterflies released across Newfoundland & Labrador last year, The Dream Fund is pleased to bring you Wings for an Angel once again in 2016.
Wings for an Angel is a province-wide butterfly release, hosted by The Dream Fund, that gives you the opportunity to release a butterfly in honour of someone who has made an impact on your life, living or deceased. Butterflies will cost $20 each and you’ll get to release it from your own hands, providing a very personal experience. If you cannot attend the event we will release your butterfly for you. All proceeds from Wings for an Angel will go to The Dream Fund to continue making dreams come true for sick children in NL.
This year, eight events will take place on July 16 at sites across Newfoundland & Labrador including: St. John’s, Carbonear, Marystown, Clarenville, Gander, Corner Brook, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and Lab City-Wabush! For more information about your local event join our Facebook Event for regular updates here.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Umm…wait a minute. Are these REAL butterflies?
Yes. Some people find this hard to believe, but we do ship real Painted Lady butterflies from Ontario for this event. Don’t worry, the butterflies are kept dormant during the shipping process up until you receive your butterfly. They can’t last forever in this state, so if the event is cancelled due to weather on July 16, it will absolutely go ahead at the same time the following day (July 17).
Will I get a charitable tax receipt for my purchase?
Based on regulations by the Canada Revenue Agency, you are essentially purchasing a product (i.e. the butterfly). While we cannot offer a charitable receipt for the retail value of the butterfly and some event expenses, we are able to offer a $10 charitable receipt for every butterfly purchased. So, for your $20 butterfly purchase, you will receive a $10 charitable receipt. We will be collecting your information on the Registration Form (if you purchased online this will be automatic) and you must provide an email address for a receipt to be issued.
Do I have to keep my Confirmation of Registration?
Yes. Your Confirmation of Registration (stub of Registration Form) must be presented at the location listed on it to receive your butterfly at the release event. There will be no exceptions to this rule as we will not have managing representatives at all locations. If you registered for the release online, please print a copy of your confirmation email to bring along with you to the event. We will be using a “Check-In” system during distribution to eliminate duplication.
If I can’t attend the release, what happens?
If you can’t attend a release several things could happen. You can either: allow someone else to release your butterfly (they will need your Confirmation of Registration); or, we will release it for you. There is no need to get in touch with us, we will simply release the butterflies that we have left.
If I registered for ‘Location A’, can I use get a butterfly the ‘Location B’ Release?
No. Due to shipping restrictions, registration cannot be transferred to another site. As you can imagine, the logistics of shipping live freight is extremely difficult.
Is there a limit to who I can honour with my butterfly?
We ask that you only honour up to two people per butterfly. The general idea to to honour someone who has had an impact on your life, living or deceased. This information will be collected on the Registration Form.
I didn’t register for the release! Can I still attend the event?
Yes. All release events are open for public viewing. The purpose of registering is to ensure that we order a butterfly for you to release at the event. If you didn’t register, you can still come enjoy the entertainment and may even luck into an extra butterfly if we have any.
What is there to do at the event?
This will vary by location. The goal is to have a family-oriented event during the afternoon of the release event in each location. This may include live music, a BBQ, face painting, etc. All release locations will be prepared for visitors at 4:00 PM (3:30 in Labrador). We ask that you be at the Release Site around this time to enjoy the entertainment and be prepared for butterfly distribution to begin when necessary.
Can I buy a butterfly on the day of the release?
No. It takes our breeder 6 weeks to breed our butterflies meaning our order must be in early. For this reason, you MUST register to release by May 20. IF extras are available that day they may be purchased at the discretion of event organizers.
Extra butterflies will be limited in quantity and will be first available to those who pre-ordered a butterfly. Sadly, some butterflies do not survive the trip and need to be replaced on site. If extras are available, they may be purchased on site for a donation of $20.
