Kendra’s Dream – December 4, 2009

On Friday, December 4, 2009, representatives from the Short Circuit Dream Fund visited nine year old Kendra Pike at the Janeway Children’s Hospital in St. John’s. Kendra, of West St. Modeste, Labrador was sent to St. John’s where she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in July 2009. Her family was forced to drop everything and move across the province to be with her.

The H1N1 Influenza Virus came down hard on the Short Circuit Dream Fund this fall. Not only did it cancel our major fundraiser, IMPROVincials NL, but visitor restrictions with Eastern Health delayed our visit to Kendra at the Janeway. After a long and suspenseful wait we were finally able to bring Kendra the iPod Touch she has waited so long to have. Little did she know, there was a surprise awaiting her. We had learned from some relatives that Kendra wasa huge computer buff and what good is an iPod without a new laptop to connect it to? The smile on Kendra’s face as her family, doctors, and nurses from the Janeway looked on will be in everyone’s mind for a very long time.

The laptop allowed Kendra to take part in class activities with her friends back in West St. Modeste, talk with them and keep in touch. On February 20, 2010 Kendra succumbed to her illness. Her iPod, full of all her favourite movies, music, and pictures was buried with her.
